The United Church of Christ will hold a worship service on November 20 at 7 p.m. Eastern time to honor the memory of transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming individuals lost to anti-transgender violence. The event coincides with Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), an annual observance that seeks to remember those who have died due to anti-transgender violence.

R Ward, minister for Gender & Sexuality Justice, said, “Trans Day of Remembrance embodies our belief in the power of memory in the naming of Trans Beloveds we have lost to violence. In a world moment, where division continues to be highlighted, the Church can offer a place of celebration and honoring of God’s uniqueness and gifts within humanity.”

Rev. Lawrence T. Richardson is scheduled as guest preacher for the service. He will deliver a sermon titled “For such a time as this,” based on the book of Esther. Rev. Richardson currently serves as Associate Conference Minister for Church Vitality and Transitions in the Michigan Conference.

“We’re so honored to have Rev. Richardson’s presence for this year’s TDOR offering,” Ward said. “I know his message will be honest, tender, and just what the Spirit calls for at this moment.”

Music and spoken word will be provided by The Many, a band known for its inclusive approach and focus on themes such as love, grace, and mercy.

“The Many will bring inclusive and gospel inspired music rooted in love, grace, and mercy,” Ward said. “They are so excited to be able to offer music for this worship experience. And, I am grateful for their ‘yes’ to be with us.”

Ward also noted that several members from UCC congregations would participate in the service: “Many UCC faces will be with us throughout the worship service. It is together, after all, that we love our neighbor wells – AND – honor the memory of our neighbors, too,” Ward added. “We encourage community gatherings, Church groups, conferences, and more to join together in viewing this service with us.”

Additional resources related to TDOR will also be made available through Love is Louder offerings. These include materials reflecting on UCC’s history supporting transgender justice work over several decades; a new hymn composed by queer sacred music artists; and a prayer focused on resilience.

Registration information for participating in the special worship service can be found at ucc.org.
