Over 1,000 individuals recently gathered in front of the United States Treasury Department in Washington, D.C., to protest security breaches and Elon Musk's access to government systems. Among the protesters was Rev. Kathy Dwyer, senior pastor at Rock Spring Congregational United Church of Christ in Arlington, Virginia. This event is part of a broader movement by faith leaders and congregants responding to current challenges.
Rev. Dwyer emphasized the importance of questioning "What is God calling us to do in this place and time?" She noted that while this question is central to the Church’s mission, its urgency has increased. According to her, "the Church as a place where we practice being the Beloved Community" prepares individuals for when these virtues are demanded by society.
Dwyer highlighted actions taken by her congregation and others across the nation. Recently, she participated in a National Day of Action organized by SURJ (Stand Up for Racial Justice) and signed a pledge titled Protect & Resist. This pledge commits signatories to protect community rights and resist what they perceive as an antidemocratic agenda.
The church has also been involved in other initiatives such as hosting a webinar on The Ethics of Faith & Work for federal employees. This event aimed to provide guidance on maintaining moral clarity amid challenging circumstances.
Welcoming the Stranger is another program through which Rock Spring supports refugees and immigrants adjusting to life in the United States. As immigration policies evolve, this work may become increasingly vital.
Balancing national issues with local community needs remains a priority for Dwyer. Her recent schedule included various pastoral duties alongside participation in events like a concert benefiting EduTutor—a response against potential changes affecting the Department of Education—and an upcoming panel discussion sponsored by NAACP focusing on building inclusive communities inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision.
Rev. Dwyer asserts that these efforts reflect a commitment "to stand on the side of justice, safety, and human dignity." She calls upon congregations nationwide to consider how best they can demonstrate love for their neighbors during these times without letting faith be used oppressively but rather as "a force for justice."
In light of growing Christian nationalism concerns within America today—an ideology seen as distorting Christianity into exclusionary power structures—Dwyer urges reflection among Christians about embodying genuine compassion amidst division fears prevalent globally now more than ever before: "We have been practicing for times like these; now we must live what we have practiced."
