The Peace United Church of Christ and Shawano First Presbyterian Church in Shawano, Wisconsin, have decided to merge. Leaders from both congregations say the move is intended to strengthen their communities and attract new members.

“This is a huge leap of faith for both churches, but God has a plan, and we are taking it as it unfolds,” said Bob Smits, council president of Peace United Church of Christ Shawano, Wisconsin. He was speaking of the merger with Shawano First Presbyterian. “Change does not come easy, but we feel this will make both of our congregations stronger." Smits was elected as the new Board Chair for the merged church.

The newly formed congregation will be called Fellowship Church of Shawano. Elaine Krohn, a member of First Presbyterian and now board vice chair of the new church, explained that discussions about merging began about six months ago. “Like a lot of churches, we have aging members, but we are hoping that combining our two will bring new people in and bolster both.”

Instead of choosing between their current buildings, both churches have put their properties up for sale. The goal is to purchase a new location that will serve as a shared home for all members. “It will be a new location, a fresh start,” said Krohn. “We are excited.”

Smits noted that deciding on a physical building is currently the main challenge facing the group. “The physical building issue is the biggest thing we are facing right now,” he said. “We are both excited, and nervous.”

While searching for a permanent space through November, church members will alternate attending services at each other's locations. An interim pastor from Peace UCC will lead all services during this period.

“Our goal is to be in our new combined home in the new year,” said Krohn.

“It’s a process,” agreed Smits. “But we are very hopeful for what the future will bring for us.”
