In recent weeks, a significant number of Palestinians have returned to northern Gaza under a fragile ceasefire. This follows over a year of conflict initiated by Israel after Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023. Amidst these developments, Global Ministries has criticized former President Donald Trump's proposed vision for Gaza as "disturbing and dangerous."
A new book titled "Rooted in Faith and Justice: Christian Calls to Conscience & Cries for Peace in Palestine" has been released by Global Ministries. The book highlights the perspectives of Palestinian Christian leaders, emphasizing that the issues did not start in 2023 but date back to Israel's occupation of Gaza since June 1967.
Peter Makari from Global Ministries stressed the importance of centering voices that are often overlooked by mainstream media. He stated, “It’s important for us to center the voices of our partners and to hear what they are telling us.”
The book includes contributions from various authors such as Rev. Munther Isaac and Rev. Mitri Raheb, who provide insights into the Palestinian experience and resilience. It aims to make complex topics accessible to readers unfamiliar with them.
Rebekah Choate explained that each chapter is concise yet informative, offering historical context and reflections on future possibilities. She said, “It’s really meant as a place for you as the reader to see what grabs hold of you.”
Krista Johnson Weicksel highlighted the intentional use of language in the book, maintaining authenticity in how Palestinian realities are described.
The editors chose not to refer to the situation as a 'conflict,' which Rebekah Choate believes implies an equality that does not exist.
Global Ministries leaders emphasized the lived experiences of those affected in their Forward, while Makari reflected on hope during challenging times, quoting Raheb: “Hope is what you do today.”
The book is available through Chalice Press, with upcoming webinars featuring its contributors open for registration.
