Julia Gaughan, chair of the United Church of Christ Board (UCCB), recently shared insights from the board's March meeting held in Cleveland. The session, which took place from March 6-8, included joint discussions with the Council of Conference Ministers to strengthen relationships and address current challenges faced by local churches.

During the meeting, various committees presented their reports. Rev. Shernell Edney-Stilley introduced nominees for the General Synod Nominating Committee. Joyce Bathke discussed updates to the Standing Rules for the Common Global Ministries Board (CGMB) in collaboration with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Tracy Keene announced that eligible nominees would be presented at a virtual UCCB meeting in May.

The UCCB also acted as the Business Committee of the General Synod, reviewing requests for Voice without Vote and resolutions submitted for consideration. A notable decision involved referring the STAR Coalition Resolution to a General Synod Committee instead of handling it internally.

Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson addressed sociopolitical issues during her report on National Ministries, emphasizing coalition building and communication across church settings. Additionally, Careina Williams led efforts to revise investment policies to better align with missional priorities.

Financially, Mark Dutell reported a year-end surplus for 2024 but noted concerns about reduced OCWM dollars, prompting further investigation by church leadership.

Reports were received from various ministries and search committees seeking candidates for Associate General Minister positions. The Standing Rules Task Force is working on proposals to improve representation among leadership roles.

The UCCB is exploring ways to support reproductive rights activists through existing Bail Funds rather than creating new ones. This initiative follows a resolution adopted at General Synod 34 denouncing the Dobbs Decision.

Gaughan concluded by inviting prayers as preparations continue for General Synod 35 in Kansas City this July.
