Cook County buildings turn green for Operation Green Light for Veterans
Toni Preckwinkle County Board President | Cook County Government

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has announced that several county buildings will be illuminated in green from November 4 to November 11 as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans. This initiative, now in its fifth year, is a nationwide effort led by the National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers. The goal is to show support for military veterans, raise awareness about their unique challenges, and highlight available resources at various levels of government.

The participating Cook County facilities include the Cook County Building at 118 N. Clark St., the George W. Dunne Administrative Building at 69 W. Washington St., and several courthouses across Chicago, Rolling Meadows, Skokie, Markham, Bridgeview, and Maywood.

Operation Green Light seeks to empower counties, veterans, and their families by supporting a coordinated transition process for new veterans. The initiative also aims to improve relocation outcomes and reduce stress during this period. It provides educational opportunities on topics such as military culture and suicide prevention.

In addition to illuminating public buildings and landmarks in green, the campaign encourages residents and businesses to participate by changing one light bulb to green. This can be an exterior or interior light as a sign of appreciation and support for veterans.

"By shining a green light, veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported," according to the announcement.

Residents across the country are encouraged to share their participation using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight on social media platforms. More information about Operation Green Light is available online.
