People in Missouri, Kansas are creating prayer shawls in anticipation of General Synod 35, a gathering of the United Church of Christ scheduled for July 11-15 at the Expo Center in Kansas City. Participants expect the event to be demanding but spiritually rewarding, and these shawls are prepared to offer comfort throughout. Recipients of the prayer shawls value the warmth and support they provide, enhancing the experiences of faith and community.
No specific requirements exist for these shawls, only that they serve their intended purpose. Rev. Merlyn Lawrence has advised a size of 20” x 60” and shared her reflective prayer: “As I knit, stitch by stitch, I prayed that the recipient of my shawl and your shawl, would indeed feel the love, the prayers, the embrace, the hugs, the comfort, the warmth of our Mothering God that all of us are enfolding into these beautiful shawls.”
For those in need of inspiration, Lawrence recommends exploring YouTube for ideas. Registration for General Synod is now available.
There are two main ways to deliver the shawls to Synod recipients. They can be mailed or delivered to Plymouth Congregational Church, attn: Kim Manz, 925 Vermont St, Lawrence, KS 66044. For delivery inquiries, Rev. Regan Saoirse can be contacted at chaplainregan@gmail.com. Alternatively, shawls can be brought directly to the General Synod, where registration volunteers will provide further information.
For those wishing to submit photos, completion numbers, questions, or concerns, Rev. Regan Saoirse can be contacted via email or text at chaplainregan@gmail.com or 785-840-7526.
