Mission OLA details activities, challenges, and community support initiatives
Bob Lombardo Bishop | Mission of Our Lady of the Angels

A recent communication from Mission OLA highlights several important developments and achievements. The message begins with a reflection on recent activities, including a notable Holy Week, where approximately 200 women participated in a retreat over Palm Sunday weekend, and an Easter pantry that provided families with hams and Easter baskets.

Collaborations with various educational institutions featured prominently in their success stories. Medical students from Michigan State University assisted with medical screenings, pantry operations, after-school, and seniors' programs. Additionally, Mission OLA hosted two seniors from Saint Ignatius College Prep and two seminarians from the Diocese of Green Bay. Their contributions, particularly to the pantry and senior citizen programs, have been invaluable.

The mission also expressed gratitude towards groups and individuals for donations that have enhanced their operations. End of Lent donations included pallet jacks and diapers. The organization faces challenges, however, as the Greater Chicago Food Depository has ceased funding the first Saturday pantry, requiring the mission to fund it on its own. Diaper program funding has similarly run dry, necessitating the purchase of an estimated 45,000 diapers monthly.

In a commemorative effort, Mission OLA observed the 66th anniversary of the OLA School Fire with a prayer service attended by around 200 individuals, including a Chicago Fire Department honor guard. Bishop Bob and the Franciscans of the Eucharist were recognized with the "Great Preacher's Award" for their work, while several volunteers from different universities contributed their time and labor during the summer.

The message highlights further donations and partnerships, including assistance from Equipment Depot with a forklift, and contributions from the Chicago Bears players Velus Jones Jr., Adrian Colbert, and Bill Murray. Additionally, the mission showcased their recent mural restoration, emphasizing community effort, with artist Jessica Patterson and support from local organizations.

Looking forward, Mission OLA seeks continued support for its pantry, special events, and retreats. Volunteers are encouraged to participate through available sign-up options.
