The Chicago Board of Education has appointed Sydney J. Morris as the new Chief Schools Officer for Chicago Public Schools (CPS), with her tenure set to begin in May 2025. Morris, an educator with almost 25 years of experience, is recognized for her commitment to educational equity and student success.
Morris's background is influenced by her family's dedication to public service, particularly inspired by her grandmother's philosophy to "leave things better than the way you found them." This approach has guided her roles as a school leader and district strategist. Prior to her new role, Morris served as Chief of Staff to Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova.
Chief Education Officer Chkoumbova expressed support for Morris's appointment, stating, "Sydney Morris is a visionary leader who brings unmatched heart, experience, and insight to this role. She has a proven track record of building strong school communities, lifting up student voices, and driving results through equity-centered leadership."
Morris's career in CPS is marked by her tenure as principal of John B. Drake Elementary School, where she led significant changes, established over 30 strategic partnerships, and secured substantial funding for student programs. Her contributions have been pivotal in CPS's academic and policy development.
She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership at Loyola University Chicago, complementing her educational background with advanced studies from Lewis University, DePaul University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
In her role as Chief Schools Officer, Morris will focus on supporting school leaders, enhancing instructional quality, and promoting equitable opportunities for CPS students. She will lead the Office of Network Supports, concentrating on strengthening accountability, fostering inclusive school environments, and building support systems for diverse communities.
Morris expressed her commitment to her new role: “I am deeply honored to step into this role and serve the city that raised me. Chicago’s students are brilliant, bold, and full of promise. I look forward to partnering with our incredible school leaders, educators, families, and communities to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive in a safe, supportive, and high-quality learning environment.”
