Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is celebrating Teacher and School Staff Appreciation Week from May 5 to May 9, 2025. This initiative aims to honor the educators and staff whose dedication contributes to the academic success and progress of students across the district.
“CPS teachers and staff are the foundation of our school communities,” stated CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “As both a CPS alumnus and a CPS parent, I know firsthand the impact that dedicated educators and staff have on shaping the lives of our students. I extend my deepest gratitude and congratulations to all our teachers and school staff for their unwavering commitment and excellence.”
A highlight of this week is the celebration of Teach Chicago Tomorrow’s fifth cohort, an initiative designed to create pathways for CPS alumni to become educators. This year marks a milestone as graduates from Illinois State University involved in this program will begin teaching in the 2025–26 school year.
CPS continues to acknowledge its educators throughout the year by sharing their experiences via blog posts on its website, where they offer insights into their profession. The dedication of CPS teachers is recognized nationally, with three teachers recently receiving the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Micaela “Mica” Ortiz Arredondo, a custodial worker at Hibbard Elementary School, received third place in Cintas Custodian of the Year Award for her outstanding service. Over 110 CPS educators were honored for achieving National Board Certification, with many renewing or earning this credential for the first time.
Comfort Agboola from Edgar Allan Poe Classical School was named Co-Regional Teacher of the Year by ISBE in March. Reflecting on these achievements, CPS Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova remarked: “I echo CEO Martinez’s sentiments about the critical role teachers and school personnel play in shaping what happens both inside and outside the classroom.”
Community members are encouraged to use social media hashtags #ThankATeacher and #TheBestAreWithCPS to express appreciation for CPS educators.
