Chicago Public Schools honors over 700 crossing guards for student safety contributions

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) recently held an event to honor over 700 crossing guards who are crucial in ensuring the safety of students traveling to and from school. The annual Crossing Guard Appreciation Day highlighted their commitment and contribution to school communities.

"Rain or shine, our crossing guards are there, ensuring students cross busy streets safely and providing families with peace of mind," said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. "Today, we proudly honor their hard work, compassion, and the vital role they play in supporting our school communities."

The celebration took place at the District’s Colman Administrative Office, where CPS awarded four individuals with the Crossing Guard of the Year Award for their exceptional service. These honorees were nominated by students, families, school leaders, and local businesses for their reliability and positive influence.

The 2024 Crossing Guard of the Year Honorees included Tammy T. Anderson from the Far South Region, Alice Mims from the Central West Region, Lorenzo Cervantes from the Southwest Region, and Gwen Ford-Nino from the North Region. Each has been recognized for their dedication and impact on their respective communities.

Crossing guards serve as reminders to motorists to slow down in school zones and help teach students safe pedestrian habits. "Crossing guards like Ms. Ford-Nino...are the heart of our safety mission," said CPS Chief Operating Officer Charles Mayfield. "They not only protect our students but also strengthen the bonds within our communities."

Statistics from the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) underscore the importance of crossing guards. In 2023, there were about 2,200 pedestrian-involved crashes resulting in over 50 deaths. CDOT has implemented Children's Safety Zones around schools with reduced speed limits and enhanced safety measures.

CPS and CDOT remind motorists to follow safety guidelines: check crosswalks when turning, stop for pedestrians as required by law, obey crossing guard signals, avoid distractions while driving, drive cautiously in poor weather conditions, allow extra time for drop-offs/pick-ups without double parking or blocking intersections.

CPS continues its investment in student safety while expressing gratitude towards crossing guards who ensure children’s safe arrival at school daily.
