In anticipation of the Tony Awards, Northlight Artistic Director BJ Jones conducted an interview with Tony-nominated actor Harry Lennix. Lennix, known for his work across Broadway, film, and television, discussed the influence of Chicago on his career.
"The ethos of Chicago is in my DNA," Lennix stated. He attributed his acting approach to training he received in Chicago, emphasizing its lasting impact on his work.
Jones highlighted Lennix's unique rhythm in performances and asked about the musical sensibility present even in Shakespearean roles. Lennix explained that poetic language in drama often benefits from a rhythmic approach similar to jazz. "The formula for Jazz... is that Western melodies plus African rhythms equals Jazz," he noted.
Reflecting on his performance in "The Great Gatsby" at Wisdom Bridge Theatre, Lennix recalled awareness of its groundbreaking nature but focused more on portraying a beloved literary character. He mentioned facing some criticism for playing Gatsby but dismissed objections based on race as unfounded.
Jones expressed admiration for Lennix's skill and gratitude for their professional relationship over the years.
