Library offers new adult learning opportunities
Chris Brown Commissioner | Chicago Public Library

The library is expanding its adult education offerings with new reading and GED classes available to the public. Adult reading classes at Legler Regional Library began on June 3, in partnership with Literacy Chicago. These sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., running through the end of July. Participants will engage in reading and writing exercises using various materials, welcoming all skill levels. Classes are free, and attendees can join at any time by registering on Literacy Chicago's website or attending in person.

Additionally, GED classes have commenced at the Harold Washington Library Center, conducted by UIC's Center for Literacy. The GED curriculum includes four subjects, taught over five-week sessions focusing on one subject per session. Science classes take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., while social studies classes are held on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Registration and placement testing are prerequisites for enrollment, but participants can join during any week of a session. For further details regarding registration and placement tests, contact the Center for Literacy at 312-312-315-2130 or annaly@uic.edu.

Community members interested in similar programs at their local library branches are encouraged to speak with their branch's adult services librarian or manager.

In addition to these classes, the library provides free online resources such as Brainfuse, Learning Express, and Cell-Ed for practicing reading and other skills. A library card number is required to access Brainfuse and Learning Express; Cell-Ed access requires PIN 3491.
