Chicago Public Library is preparing to host the fourth annual Gamer’s Universe, a gaming convention led by teenagers. Scheduled for Saturday, June 14, from 11 am to 4 pm, the event will take place at the Harold Washington Library Center.
The convention is organized in collaboration with the Chicago Teen Gamer’s Guild (CTGG), comprising high school interns at CPL. The event promises a full day of activities including cosplay contests, live gaming competitions, and demonstrations of games created by teens. It aims to showcase creativity and collaboration within the gaming community.
“Gamer’s Universe is what happens when we trust teens to lead—and support them every step of the way,” stated Commissioner Chris Brown. “Our teens will transform Harold Washington Library into a one-day arcade: joyful, inclusive, and open to all. With guidance from our YOUmedia mentors and staff, this is a powerful example of what libraries make possible—creativity, safety, and real community connection.”
CTGG's involvement aligns with CPL's broader mission to empower teenagers through creative expression and career exploration. The internship provides participants with experience in various aspects of event planning such as budgeting and vendor coordination.
"My experience this year has been very fulfilling in terms of organizing and planning this year's convention!” said Ira, a teen intern involved since the inception of Gamer’s Universe four years ago. “As someone who loves to plan things, I had the pleasure of exploring the process of organizing a real-life experience. I got to learn how to utilize budgets, make connections to many different people, create fun events and so much more. I hope visitors are able to find a new exciting experience that creates a lasting memory!"
This year's event builds on previous successes by offering attendees opportunities to explore original games developed by CTGG teens, play popular games at various stations throughout the library, participate in competitive matches, and engage with others during the cosplay contest. Additionally, resources will be available for those interested in delving deeper into Chicago's expanding gaming scene.
The event is free for all attendees thanks to donations from supporters of the Chicago Public Library Foundation. For more information or to reserve a spot, visit chipublib.org/gamersuniverse.
