Chicago Public Library expands nature-themed Discovery Packs
Chris Brown Commissioner | Chicago Public Library

Chicago Public Library (CPL) has expanded its collection of nature-themed ScienceConnections Discovery Packs, offering families new ways to explore the natural world. The initiative is in collaboration with Lincoln Park Zoo and other partners.

The "Animal Tracks" pack allows families to learn about animal remnants such as footprints and broken sticks. This pack includes rubbing plates, games, and books for educational fun at home.

The "Birds and Birdwatching" pack offers bird guides, bird songs, and tools for making bird calls. Binoculars are also included for spotting birds during nature walks.

For geology enthusiasts, the "Rocks and Minerals" pack provides opportunities to handle gemstones and study geological specimens using a pocket microscope and UV light. Books accompanying the pack offer further insights into rocks' stories about the Earth.

Discovery Packs are available for checkout by adults only, with one backpack per family at a time. They cannot be placed on hold or renewed and must be returned to their original location.

Further details on the ScienceConnections project can be found at chipublib.org/STEAMpower. The program receives support from S&C Electric Company, Norfolk Southern Corporation, and other donors through the Chicago Public Library Foundation.
