Chicago Public Library launches summer program with over 2,000 free events

The Chicago Public Library (CPL) has announced the return of its annual Summer at CPL event, running from June 21 through August 3. This year, over 2,000 free programs will be available across all 81 library locations for children, teens, and adults. The season begins with nature-themed celebrations on June 21 at Legler, Woodson, and Sulzer regional libraries.

The theme for this year is "Growing Minds, Going Green," encouraging participants to explore the natural world through curated booklists and STEM programs. Last year's program saw participation from more than 445,000 individuals. According to a survey, 91% of parents noted an increase in their child's reading and learning during the summer due to the program.

"Summer at CPL is how we bring the city together—through reading, play, exploration and access," said Library Commissioner Chris Brown. "From early learners to lifelong learners, we’re creating experiences that grow imagination and build community all summer long."

This year introduces expanded programming for adults. An Adult Program Guide and Log is now available at all branches. Participants who complete six out of ten activities can earn a limited-edition CPL baseball cap. Adults will also have access to reading recommendations both in-branch and online.

CPL's inaugural Go Green Fair will take place on June 25 at Harold Washington Library Center. It will feature an eco-volunteer fair along with live music and craft stations. Adult programs throughout the summer will focus on topics like urban wildlife and environmental justice.

For children aged 0–13, there is a Summer Activity Guide filled with nature-based prompts and a Free Family Pass to the Art Institute of Chicago. Kids who read daily for a set period can earn a Summer at CPL t-shirt.

Teens can participate by completing activities listed on a “Pick 4” postcard for prizes. Activities include crafts and field trips to cultural sites such as Lincoln Park Zoo.

Sustainability initiatives are part of this year's program as well. Composting stations will be set up at select branches in collaboration with the Department of Streets and Sanitation. Additionally, solar panel installations are planned for South Chicago and Humboldt Park branches in partnership with the Department of Environment.

All events are free and open to the public; further details can be found by visiting local branches or checking chipublib.org/summer.
