Dr. Macquline King has officially started her role as Interim CEO/Superintendent of Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Dr. King, who began her tenure last Friday, is known for her extensive experience in transforming urban school systems and advancing policies focused on equity.
Her approach to leadership emphasizes transparency, equity, and student-centered strategies. Raised on the South Side of Chicago, Dr. King's early education took place at Oakenwald North Elementary and the Metropolitan School of Studies. Overcoming challenges as a teen mother, she embodies the transformative power of education.
Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his support: “I wish Macquline the very best in her new role as Interim CEO/Superintendent of Chicago Public Schools,” he said. Highlighting her 25 years with CPS, Johnson added that Dr. King brings "a deep, firsthand understanding of our school communities" and is well-prepared to manage upcoming challenges.
Dr. King's educational background includes studies at City Colleges of Chicago and a degree in Teacher Education from National Louis University. Her career spans roles as a master teacher and National Board Certified educator, where she supported novice teachers' growth.
After teaching for 12 years, she moved into leadership through the New Leaders Principal Preparation Program. As principal at Dumas Elementary in Woodlawn, she secured technology grants and navigated the 2013 CPS school closures' emotional impact. At Courtenay Elementary, she launched a gifted magnet cluster program and led significant fundraising efforts.
Her achievements include recognition as a Cahn Fellow for Distinguished Educators and completing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.
In 2022, Dr. King served as Senior Director of Education Policy for the City of Chicago, leading major policy initiatives such as reactivating the UNCF Scholarship Campaign in Chicago.
CPS Board President Sean B. Harden stated: “Today marks Dr. King’s first day as Interim CEO/Superintendent of Chicago Public Schools—but she brings to this role a lifetime of dedication to public education.” He emphasized her understanding of district challenges and opportunities.
Dr. King will attend the upcoming June Board meeting with the Chicago Board of Education next Thursday afternoon.
“I am honored to continue my service to our students and families while leading the District through the challenges ahead,” said Dr. King regarding her new position at CPS.
