Chicago Public Library (CPL) is celebrating Disability Pride Month in July, coinciding with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The library encourages individuals with disabilities and allies to participate in various programs and activities throughout the month.
Among the featured events is a musical celebration led by Chicago drummer and bandleader Tommy Carroll. This interactive event will take place on Tuesday, July 29 at 6 p.m. at Sulzer Regional Library. Tommy Carroll, who is totally blind, will share stories about his disability identity and experiences as a professional musician. The event includes a percussion demonstration followed by participatory drumming.
The library also offers a range of other events such as Destination Discovery ASL Story Time at Field Museum, Music and Stories with Music Playhouse, Musical Jeopardy and Trivia, RTA Programs and Assistance Table, and Sounds of Summer: Afternoon Concert.
For film enthusiasts, CPL provides screenings with subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing at all its locations. A full list of screenings is available for those interested.
In addition to events, CPL offers resources like a Disability Pride Month coloring sheet available online or at library locations while supplies last. There are also reading recommendations for kids, teens, and adults under categories such as "Disability Pride Month 2025: Books for Kids" and "Disability Pride: Recent Highlights."
