United Church of Christ nominee calls for action amidst global challenges
Marilyn Pagan-Banks Head Pastor | San Lucas United Church of Christ

A United Church of Christ nominee, Rev. Shari Prestemon, received a standing ovation after addressing the church’s General Synod on July 11 in Kansas City. Prestemon, nominated for Associate General Minister and Co-Executive of Global Ministries, urged delegates to persist in offering pastoral care and prophetic courage during what she described as "alarming" times.

Prestemon has served as an acting officer for 18 months and awaits a formal vote from delegates on July 14. She expressed her readiness to continue serving if elected, stating, “If it is God’s will and your will as General Synod, I’m ready to continue serving in this church that I have long loved.”

Her extensive career with the UCC spans over 30 years, including roles such as local church pastor and Conference Minister in Minnesota. The UCC Board nominated her in March.

Rev. Shayna Johnson introduced Prestemon at the event as “a cradle UCC’er who loves the church with her whole being.” Prestemon emphasized the importance of authentic partnerships, combining prophetic witness with pastoral care, and recognizing the impact of small ministries.

She highlighted global issues like instability and political violence while advocating for maintaining hope through effective ministry work.

Prestemon faces potential changes if elected due to possible amendments to the UCC Constitution and Bylaws that could alter her role by 2028. Despite these uncertainties, she conveyed a strong commitment to partnering with others for justice and peace.
