Most communication during General Synod Plenary sessions typically flows from the platform to the floor. However, this dynamic changes during "SpeakOuts!"—a long-standing feature of these sessions.
Delegates sign up for a chance to speak for one minute on any topic they choose. The microphone is muted exactly 60 seconds after the speaker begins. Each SpeakOut! block lasts 10 minutes, and slots are in high demand.
At 9:01 a.m. on Saturday morning, ten delegates lined up for General Synod 35’s first SpeakOut! session. Their topics were diverse.
Ruth Shaver encouraged those interested in serving the church to consider the Pathways for Theological Education program.
Molly Carlson and Arlene Turner highlighted that 129 people, including 36 children, died following flooding in Texas last week, with over 160 still missing. They called for a moment of silence from the assembly.
Kevin Tindell celebrated the Open and Affirming Coalition’s 40th anniversary and urged churches to act because “they’re trying to kill us all,” with special concern for “our trans siblings.”
Jonathan Bradner of the Heartland Conference announced his candidacy for public office in the U.S. House of Representatives. He noted that “Black clergy have always understood the importance of serving in office,” while white clergy often remain in their pulpits. He encouraged younger clergy to represent their communities in office.
June Boutwell supported the Council for Racial and Ethnic Ministries or COREM resolution and urged delegates to reflect quietly on immigration issues facing the church.
Martha Koenig Stone invited delegates to join a prayer vigil for peace in Palestine at 4 p.m., urging them to “keep your eye” on that land and advocating for a UCC movement supporting Palestinian solidarity.
Zachary Worley spoke about natural psychedelic medications as “wellness tools.” He emphasized understanding them within faith contexts and harm reduction, directing attendees to informational material available at an Exhibits Hall table.
Bill Bender informed attendees that the Northern Plains Conference is searching for a Conference Minister, noting its proximity to Canada and offering "plenty of open roads" for someone feeling called.
Sheila Harvey celebrated both the United Church of Christ's Just Peace Church's 40th anniversary and over 200 local Florida Conference churches adopting this designation.
Terry Williams concluded with a memorial tribute to Paul Fogel, who passed away in November 2024 and was known by many delegates.
SpeakOut! blocks are planned for each remaining Plenary session.
