Following her speech at the 35th General Synod of the United Church of Christ, Rev. Shari Prestemon engaged in a Q&A session on July 12. Prestemon, who has served as acting Associate General Minister and Co-Executive of Global Ministries for 18 months, answered questions from attendees.
Prestemon was asked about learning from global partners and responded candidly: “This might be hard to hear,” she said. “What we need to learn is what it means to be less privileged.” She emphasized that their partners have been risk-takers for a long time and are not exceptional but rather experienced in being faithful during challenging times.
Reflecting on a meeting about Philippine human rights, Prestemon mentioned Rev. George Lungay’s testimony. She was moved by his dedication despite personal risks: “George shared his experience with the committee, and it was powerful.”
When questioned about potential transformative moments for the church, she stated: “We have to decide what our line is... Are we willing to put ourselves at risk?” Prestemon stressed integrity as a guiding principle learned from her father: “Integrity is everything.”
Regarding budget impacts on Global Ministries’ work, Prestemon acknowledged reduced mission coworkers but highlighted ongoing partnerships in 90 countries. A new strategic planning process will focus on innovative models like working with locals instead of sending North Americans abroad.
Addressing differences with partners over issues like LGBTQ+ rights or perspectives on Gaza, Prestemon noted such conversations occur "in love." She expressed concern about local churches' awareness of global communities and sees Global Ministries as pivotal in humanizing policy decisions.
To enhance communication, she started a blog titled Voices of the Journey and actively shares partner stories via social media. Prestemon urged church members to engage more actively: “What you can do is show interest... Engage!”
The session ended with applause from around 75 attendees. Delegates are set to vote on July 14 regarding her formal election as AGM.
