General Synod elects new at-large members for United Church of Christ Board
Marilyn Pagan-Banks Head Pastor | San Lucas United Church of Christ

The General Synod has elected 12 at-large members to the United Church of Christ (UCC) Board during its plenary session on Monday, July 14. The UCC Board can have up to 52 members, with 36 elected by the General Synod. According to current UCC Bylaws, board members serve for three General Synods or six years. However, with a shift to a triennial Synod, this could extend terms to nine years.

If amendments to the Bylaws are approved by the General Synod, those elected will revert to serving six-year terms.

Complete biographies of each newly elected board member are available on the General Synod website.

The Nominating Committee reported that while the demographic composition of nominees largely meets Bylaws requirements, only 8% were under age 30—less than half of the required 20%. They also noted that two Conferences had more than three nominees. The committee is increasing outreach at youth and young adult events to boost interest among under-30 UCC members. It mentioned that issues with Conference representation stem from recent mergers and may require Bylaw adjustments.
