Following a thorough discussion, the General Synod has declared the ongoing situation in Palestine as a "humanitarian crisis that calls for immediate action." The declaration was made through the resolution titled “Declaration for an End to Genocide in Palestine,” which was approved by 594 delegates, with 32 opposing and 14 abstaining.

Rev. Emma Loane, chair of the resolution's committee and delegate from the Indiana-Kentucky Conference, emphasized the global urgency and human cost involved. She invited committee members to gather around the baptismal fount as a symbol of their collective effort.

Mayadah Tarazi from YWCA Palestine expressed gratitude for the resolution while highlighting ongoing losses in Gaza. “This resolution is not an end, but a beginning, a faithful act of truth-telling," she said.

Jerry Locula from the Minnesota Conference drew parallels between Gaza's situation and historical injustices faced by other communities. He stated, “On a daily basis, the genocide in Gaza has been implemented by American taxes."

Two amendments were proposed but not passed. One aimed to strengthen opposition to antisemitism within the resolution, while another sought to denounce Hamas explicitly. Peter Makari spoke on UCC’s history against antisemitism, affirming its relationship with Jewish communities.

Fred Rogers opposed changes that might shift focus from current issues. He noted that attempts to balance concerns about past events with present responsibilities could dilute their impact.

The final resolution underscores theological commitments and connects to previous resolutions like the 2021 Declaration for Just Peace Between Palestine and Israel. Rev. Loane concluded, “Passing this resolution says we will not look away... We will follow Jesus who blesses the peacemakers.”
