Chicago Public Library (CPL), in collaboration with the Departments of Environment (DOE) and Fleet & Facility Management (2FM), has announced new solar installations at the South Chicago and Humboldt Park Branch locations. These initiatives are part of the City’s Chi100 initiative, aimed at expanding clean, renewable energy solutions citywide.

The project includes rooftop solar panels and full energy retrofits, such as lighting upgrades and high-efficiency HVAC replacements. Mayor Brandon Johnson stated, “Today, with new solar installations on two Chicago libraries, we are taking our commitment to clean energy to the next level.” The improvements are funded by the Chicago Recovery Plan to create an equity-based investment strategy post-COVID-19 pandemic.

Chris Brown, Commissioner of CPL, emphasized that these projects position libraries as leaders in climate action while advancing equity and knowledge. Angela Tovar, DOE Commissioner, highlighted that these efforts ensure equitable access to renewable energy. Julie Hernandez-Tomlin from 2FM noted the reduction in operating costs and increased comfort for library patrons.

Angela Hurlock from Claretian Associates expressed support for these updates in South Chicago. Starting next week, CPL and DOE will host public workshops on solar energy with partners like Citizens Utility Board and Elevate.
