Cook County Board approves over $80M for transportation improvements
Toni Preckwinkle County Board President | Cook County Government

The Cook County Board of Commissioners has sanctioned over $81 million for transportation projects within the county. This funding is allocated to the Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) for road and bridge improvements, which aim to enhance economic development and quality of life.

"Investing in transportation infrastructure provides our communities with improved mobility as we bring our roads and bridges into a state of good repair," stated Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. "The value of these investments goes beyond the project itself. This work supports community development, creates jobs, and provides quality of life benefits to our residents."

Among the projects approved are professional design engineering services in Burr Ridge, costing $731,138, for reconstructing a roadway on the I-55 frontage road. In Chicago, $10.5 million will be spent on various infrastructure projects including street resurfacing and traffic signal modernizations.

Countywide efforts include pavement rehabilitation across 25 roadways with an investment of over $42 million. Specific projects in Southern Cook County involve multiple roads such as Wolf Road from W. 143rd Street to W. 135th Street and Holbrook Road from Dixie Highway to Halsted Street.

Northern Cook County will see improvements on roads like Arcadia Street from Linder Avenue to Frontage Road and Church Street to Long Avenue among others.

Additionally, countywide professional engineering services are set at $10.5 million for preliminary design and environmental review processes, while structural program management services are allocated nearly $3.5 million.

In South Holland, bridge replacement projects valued at approximately $13.8 million will commence this summer at 143rd Street over Tinley Creek and 170th Street over Thorn Creek, with completion expected by 2027.
