McGaw YMCA board chair embarks on cross-country bike ride for men’s residence
Monique Parsons President/CEO | Mcgaw YMCA

Mark Metz, chair of the McGaw YMCA board, and his wife Noreen Edwards are preparing for a 4,100-mile self-supported bike ride across the United States to raise awareness and funds for the McGaw YMCA Men’s Residence housing program in Evanston, Illinois. The ride will begin on August 24 and is expected to conclude in mid-November 2025.

The couple will travel along the TransAmerica Trail from the Pacific to the Atlantic using recumbent bicycles. Their goal is to highlight one of the last remaining YMCA Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing programs in the country.

Metz emphasized the importance of the residence: “The Men’s Residence is more than just a roof over someone’s head,” he said. “It provides affordable, stable housing in a supportive environment for over 150 men—many of whom are working to rebuild their lives, overcome hardship, and create a path forward.”

He described their journey as “our way of showing up for our neighbors who live in the Men’s Residence.” Metz and Edwards plan to document their trip by sharing updates, photos, and reflections throughout their cross-country ride.

The event comes as McGaw YMCA is conducting a capital campaign to renovate its Men’s Residence. So far, more than $11.7 million has been raised toward a $22.5 million target through both public and private contributions. The organization plans to expand fundraising efforts once about 80% of funding is secured.

Monique Parsons, President & CEO of McGaw YMCA, explained: “At McGaw YMCA, we believe everyone deserves the dignity of safe and affordable housing. The Men’s Residence isn’t just a building, it’s a home and a place of hope for so many. That’s why we’re deeply committed to supporting it through our daily work with residents, this cross-country ride, and the upcoming renovation.”

Supporters can follow Metz and Edwards’ progress on Instagram or subscribe to their blog for updates. Donations toward the renovation project are also being accepted online.
