The Cook County Bureau of Asset Management has completed the installation of 1,346 solar panels on the roof of the Sixth Municipal District - Markham Courthouse at 16501 Kedzie Ave in Markham. This project is part of Cook County’s efforts to advance its Clean Energy Plan.
“At Cook County, we’re committed to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and taking immediate action toward a more sustainable future,” said President Toni Preckwinkle. “The installation of these solar panels allow for cleaner air, less pollution, and provides local job opportunities. We’re proud of the steps we are taking for a more sustainable future.”
The new solar array generates energy on-site using sunlight, which reduces the amount of electricity that must be purchased from external sources. This initiative aims to lower costs for taxpayers and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by shifting away from traditional fossil fuels such as gas or coal. The county has also installed signage in front of the courthouse to inform residents about the project and how solar panels work.
According to data from 2023, the 743 kW/DC rooftop photovoltaic system is expected to provide about 26% of the annual electricity needs for the Markham Courthouse. It is projected to generate approximately 918,900 kilowatt-hours each year and reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by an estimated 419 metric tons.
