Originally from Humacao, Puerto Rico, Doña Rosa became a beloved member of Chicago's Puerto Rican community, particularly in Humboldt Park. In the 1960s, she owned the renowned Vega Baja restaurant, known for its traditional Puerto Rican cuisine and vibrant cultural ambiance, representing a gathering place that fostered unity and connection among neighborhood residents.
Doña Rosa's commitment to serving others extended to her roles as a School Community Representative in the Chicago Public Schools system at Lowell and Mozart Elementary Schools. Her dedication to education and community engagement enriched the lives of students, families, and colleagues alike.
Preceded in death by her husband Jose Ramon Hernandez, daughter Delia Morales, and son Frank Caraballo, Doña Rosa is fondly remembered by her surviving family members and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her enduring strength, generosity, and dedication to family and community echo in the hearts of all who knew her.
A Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Andersen Morgan Funeral Home in Chicago. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association are encouraged in memory of Doña Rosa M. Hernandez.
