Chicago Public Library will increase its social service partnerships at the Harold Washington Library Center this fall. The initiative includes bringing ShowerUp, a mobile service that provides private shower facilities and personal care items, to the library site.
ShowerUp’s mobile unit offers guests access to private "shower suites" equipped with showers, sinks, hot water, and necessary toiletries. New and gently used clothing will also be distributed to those who need it.
In addition to the showers, the library will host "Coffee & Connections." During this event, attendees can have coffee while learning about available library resources and social work support. Social workers from Hartgrove and Garfield Park Behavioral Health centers will be present on Mondays from 10:00 A.M. to noon.
The program is scheduled for September 8, October 6, November 10 and 24, as well as December 8 and 15.
According to the Chicago Public Library: "ShowerUp builds community, elevates dignity, and ignites hope through mobile showers and personal care. Inside the ShowerUp mobile unit, guests will find private, comfortable 'shower suites' with a clean shower and sink with plenty of hot water and whatever they need to Shower Up! New and gently used clothing will also be available to those in need."
Social workers onsite are intended to connect visitors with additional services while they wait or after using the shower facilities.
