Chicago Public Library announces events for Latine History Month across city branches

Chicago Public Library will observe Latine History Month from September 15 to October 15, with the theme “My Culture Lives/ Mi cultura vive.” The library aims to highlight the resilience and cultural contributions of Latine communities in Chicago through a series of programs focusing on literacy, arts, and music.

A featured event is a job fair at the Little Village Branch on Tuesday, October 7 at 3:30 p.m., where attendees can participate in mock interviews, resume building, and connect with community organizations.

Other events include book discussions such as “The Great Divide” by Cristina Henriquez at Bucktown-Wicker Park on September 20 and “Hurricane Season” by Fernanda Melchor at RJD-Bridgeport on September 30. An author talk titled “The Songs of Michoacán 1830-1940” will take place at Lozano Branch on September 18.

Programs for children and families include Club Create/Club Creativo at Back of the Yards throughout September, Mexican Folk Art Craft at South Shore on September 18, and Pinguis Facepainting at Little Village Branch on September 21.

Tweens and teens can join activities like Tween Craft Night: Talavera Tiles at Woodson Regional on September 17, Chocolate Sugar Skulls at Lincoln Park on September 27, and Make a Piñata/Haz una piñata at Gage Park on October 2.

Adults are invited to Loteria Night at Whiner Beer Company on September 25, Center of Peruvian Arts (Ruben Pachas) at Chicago Lawn Branch on October 4, and Latin Rhythms at Independence Branch also on October 4.

Film screenings include WTTW’s documentary “The Young Lords of Lincoln Park” at King Branch on September 20 and the movie “Vivo” (2021) at Toman Branch on September 13.

Exhibits featuring Latine artists will be displayed from September 15 to October 15 across several branches: Johnny Felix (Humboldt Park), Lala Bolander (Lozano), Berenice Lopez (Little Village), Fabiola Rivera (Brighton Park), and Iliana Cardona (Sulzer Regional).

A printable coloring sheet by Chicago artist Arly Aguirre is available. The library also offers recommended reading lists for kids, teens, and adults focused on Latinx History Month.
