Chicago Public Library offers resources for kids learning to read in Spanish
Linda Johnson Rice Board President at Chicago Public Library | Chicago Public Library

Chicago Public Library is offering resources to help children learn to read in Spanish. The library encourages families to support bilingualism, highlighting its benefits for cognitive development and relationship building.

According to a guest blog post by Lucía Rocha-Nestler of Hola Books, "Being bilingual in any language builds brains, strengthens relationships and opens doors that last a lifetime! Learn more about the power of bilingualism for children in this guest blog postby Lucía Rocha-Nestler of Hola Books."

The library outlines two key skills necessary for reading: comprehension and decoding. Comprehension involves understanding the meaning of words and sentences. Families are encouraged to read books in Spanish together and attend bilingual programs at Chicago Public Library branches.

Decoding refers to the ability to read words using letter sounds. The library has made decodable books in Spanish available at several locations, including Back of the Yards, Chicago Lawn, Gage Park, Little Village, Lozano, Vodak-East Side, and West Belmont branches.
