McGaw YMCA board chair leads cross-country ride for men’s residence renovation
Monique Parsons President/CEO | Mcgaw YMCA

Mark Metz, Board Chair of the McGaw YMCA, and his wife Noreen Edwards are currently undertaking a cross-country bicycle ride to raise awareness and support for the McGaw YMCA Men’s Residence housing program and its upcoming renovation. The initiative, called Miles That Matter, aims to highlight the need for affordable housing in Evanston.

The couple began their journey on August 24 from Florence, Oregon. As of September 24, they have completed 1,434 miles out of their planned 4,100-mile route along the TransAmerica Trail. They are traveling from the Pacific to the Atlantic using recumbent bicycles. Their trip has included challenging terrain and weather as well as positive encounters with people along the way.

Community members are invited to participate in a related event—the Miles That Matter Cycling Challenge—which will take place from October 13 to November 13. During this period, participants can pledge cycling miles or minutes by any type of bike and collectively aim to reach 4,100 miles. The challenge is free and open to all; registration information is available at bit.ly/mcgawmmcc.

Additional details about Metz and Edwards’ journey can be found on the McGaw YMCA website (www.mcgawymca.org/miles-that-matter/), through Instagram (@ymcamilesthatmatter), or via their blog (crazyguyonabike.com/doc/milesthatmatter). Donations supporting the Men’s Residence Renovation can be made at https://bit.ly/residencecampaign.

The campaign seeks both financial contributions and increased community involvement to address local housing needs.
