The closing ceremony for the "Above & Beyond" exhibition will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Harold Washington Library Center. The installation commemorates American lives lost in Vietnam and was developed through a partnership among veteran artists, the National Veterans Art Museum, the Pritzker Military Museum and Library, and the Harold Washington Library Center.
The exhibition features hand-stamped dog tags created over two years using an authentic military Graphotype machine. These tags are arranged chronologically by date of death and are suspended from the ceiling on the library’s third floor. This arrangement turns the entryway into a space for remembrance.
According to organizers, "Join us for the closing ceremony of Above & Beyond, an extraordinary installation that honors the American lives lost in Vietnam. As Veteran artists, Gold Star families, and community members we will honor these lives and the power of art to preserve memory."
They also note that this event "marks your final chance to experience one of the most moving war memorials ever created before its deinstallation at the end of this year." Visitors are encouraged to attend before the exhibit is removed in December 2025.
The Harold Washington Library Center is located at 400 S. State Street. More information can be obtained by calling (312) 747-4300 or emailing hwlc@chipublib.org.
