Chicago Public Library branches host family art program with Art Institute partnership
Chris Brown Commissioner | Chicago Public Library

Families in Chicago have a new opportunity to make art together at their local libraries. The Artist's Studio at the Library, a program developed by the Art Institute of Chicago, offers open-ended, process-based art activities for children and their caregivers. The activities are designed to encourage creativity and connection while exploring books and works of art from the museum’s collection.

"Come to The Artist's Studio at the Library where you and your family can engage in open-ended, process-based art activities designed by the Art Institute of Chicago to spark creativity, joy and connection," the program announcement states.

Each activity invites participants to use library resources and art from the museum’s collection as inspiration. Children can either take their artwork home or contribute it to a community gallery within the library. Studio projects are aimed at children ages 3 to 8 with a caregiver, or ages 9 and up on their own. This fall, one of the featured projects is a texture collage print inspired by artist Elizabeth Catlett.

The Artist's Studio is available at several Chicago Public Library locations, including Humboldt Park, Austin, Beverly, Brighton Park, Bucktown-Wicker Park, Budlong Woods, Garfield Ridge, Greater Grand Crossing, Legler Regional, Little Village, Manning, Mayfair, Vodak-East Side, West Belmont, and Woodson Regional branches.

Some branches have set hours for The Artist's Studio, which can be found in the events calendar. Otherwise, families can visit during regular library hours.

The Art Institute of Chicago also offers similar artmaking experiences at its Ryan Learning Center. Free and discounted tickets for the Art Institute and other museums are available through Explore More Illinois, which helps families access cultural attractions across Chicago and beyond.

For more information about visiting the Art Institute, including hours and admission details, families are encouraged to check the museum’s website.

Families seeking further art inspiration can also explore recommended books available through the library.
