Chicago Public Library launches new platform for citywide book club access
Chris Brown Commissioner | Chicago Public Library

Chicago Public Library (CPL) has introduced The Reading Set, a new book borrowing platform designed to simplify the process for book clubs in Chicago. This service allows readers to reserve complete sets of books for their clubs, with more than 300 titles available across various genres and languages. After logging in with a library card, users can select dates and pick up their chosen set at any CPL location.

The library notes that participation in its book clubs has grown over the past decade, indicating an increased interest among adults in engaging with literature and building community through discussion.

Mayor Brandon Johnson commented on the launch: “Book clubs create space for discussion, connection and curiosity, all essential to a thriving community and a thriving Chicago. The Reading Set builds on Chicago Public Library’s legacy of making reading accessible to everyone. I’m proud that Chicago Public Library, one of the largest public library systems in the country, continues to make borrowing books easier for every cardholder.”

The Reading Set includes literary classics as well as contemporary novels and nonfiction works. Books are offered in multiple languages such as Spanish, Polish, and Korean to reflect the city’s diverse population.

CPL Commissioner Chris Brown said: “From beloved works like 'The Color Purple' by Alice Walker to contemporary favorites like 'My Year of Rest and Relaxation' by Ottessa Moshfegh, The Reading Set brings together stories that capture the depth and diversity of Chicago’s readers. CPL is proud to be the first major library system in the U.S. to offer this groundbreaking service to our patrons.”

To mark the launch, CPL is hosting a Book Club Celebration at Harold Washington Library Center’s Winter Garden on October 23, 2025. The event will feature crafts, mocktails, a conversation with author Mia P. Manansala, and a volunteer fair with local literary organizations.

CPL also offers ongoing book discussions at locations throughout Chicago, including sessions focused on the 2025 One Book, One Chicago selection "Olga Dies Dreaming" by Xochitl Gonzalez.
