The Cook County Board of Commissioners has approved a series of contracts to advance transportation projects managed by the Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH). The contracts, which cover planning, design, and construction work, are intended to improve safety, connectivity, and infrastructure across the region.
One project in Burnham involves $2.6 million for professional design engineering services to build a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Brainard Avenue and four railroad tracks. This bridge will connect existing bike and pedestrian paths in Burnham, Chicago, and the Metra Hegewisch station.
In Chicago, $2.15 million is allocated for engineering services focused on reconstructing Butler Drive within the Illinois International Port District from 130th Street to Doty Avenue.
Maywood will see $4.2 million directed toward studying a grade separation at 1st Avenue where it crosses Union Pacific railroad tracks.
A major project on Touhy Avenue has received an $87.2 million construction contract. The work will reconstruct Touhy Avenue between Elmhurst Road and Mount Prospect Road, add a bridge over Union Pacific railroad tracks, create new ramps for the upcoming Tollway I-490, make intersection improvements along Elmhurst Road, and install a shared path for bicycles and pedestrians.
South Cook County will benefit from a $600,000 study on improving crossings for cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users over interstates in the area.
The DoTH offers an interactive map detailing ongoing construction projects at https://maps.cookcountyil.gov/hwyproject/.
