The library is offering a range of programs and resources to support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers. Among the initiatives, the Woodson Regional Library will host a Dementia Caregiver Summit on November 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in collaboration with Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center. The event aims to bring together caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community groups for networking, learning, and mutual support.
In partnership with Mather Institute, the library has introduced Boost Your Brain and Memory programs at several branches, including Edgebrook and West Englewood. The program will be available at the West Englewood branch on November 20. Registration details are available online. Additionally, Mather Institute has provided hydroponic gardening kits for adults aged 50 and above to pick up free of charge at select branches. This initiative is expected to continue into 2026.
The Kelly branch has teamed up with the Alzheimer's Association's Illinois Chapter to offer an Empowered Caregiver series. More information about this series and registration can be found on the events page or by visiting the Alzheimer's Association website for further resources.
Some branches now feature memory cafes—informal gatherings designed for those affected by dementia—which are highlighted by Dementia Friendly America as supportive community spaces. The Hall branch has also begun assembling memory care kits, with plans to expand this collection next year.
According to library officials, more programs focused on dementia awareness and brain health are planned for upcoming months. Information about these initiatives can be found on the events page or through future news updates.
November marks National Family Caregivers Month, during which the City of Chicago provides additional support services and resources tailored for those living with dementia and their caregivers.
A curated list of books related to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is also available from Adult Services Collection Development staff at the library.
