Cook County is facing its first winter storm of the season, bringing snowfall across the region. The Department of Transportation and Highways (DoTH) is currently plowing the 1,620 lane miles under its maintenance to keep roads safe for drivers.
The DoTH has advised motorists to exercise caution while driving in winter conditions. Drivers are reminded to slow down and be aware of snowplows on the road.
“Don’t crowd the plows while they are working to clear the roads,” said Ed Tully, DoTH maintenance bureau chief. “Your best bet is to stay a safe distance behind the plow so you can drive over freshly plowed and salted roadways.”
Officials also recommend that residents keep an emergency kit in their vehicles in case they experience a breakdown or become stuck during severe weather. Suggested items for a basic safety kit include a shovel, windshield scraper, flashlight with extra batteries, battery-powered radio, water, snacks such as energy bars, matches and candles, extra hats and mittens, first aid kit with pocketknife, necessary medications, blankets or sleeping bag, tow chain or rope, materials for traction like sand or cat litter, jumper cables, emergency flares and reflectors, distress flag and whistle, and a cell phone adapter.
Additional tips include reversing batteries in flashlights to prevent accidental use and storing emergency items inside the passenger compartment rather than the trunk.
