As the preparations for the General Synod continue, the General Synod staff are inviting self-nominations for individuals to serve as committee chairs. This call is directed at delegates attending General Synod 35 in Kansas City, scheduled from July 11-15.
Committee chairs play a crucial role in guiding their committees through resolution work at the Synod. Their responsibilities include facilitating an Educational Intensive, creating a committee agenda, leading discussions on resolutions, and presenting their findings during plenary sessions.
Training and support are provided for committee chairs, who will collaborate with the Committee Process Team. Participants must be available for training starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 10, prior to the official start of the Synod when they will be assigned to specific committees.
Applications will be pooled for selection closer to the event date. Kevin Peterson, responsible for resolutions and committee processes, noted that past participants found chairing rewarding. He emphasized that expertise in resolution topics is not required: "In fact, we want quite the opposite – an ideal chair is dispassionate about the resolution or the topic but very passionate about the resolution process."
Candidates should have experience chairing boards or committees and demonstrate qualities like graciousness and respect for process integrity. Peterson encourages submissions by March 31, with more information available online.
Registration remains open for all attendees of General Synod.
