The Pension Boards-United Church of Christ, Inc. has announced the sudden passing of its President and CEO, Brian R. Bodager, on February 15. Bodager had previously announced his departure from the organization on February 1, intending to retire and spend more time with his family while focusing on his health. He is survived by his wife Debbie and three children: Jonathan, Brandon, and Lauren.

Following Bodager's announcement of retirement plans, a succession plan was initiated. Walter A. Reyes, who held the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, has been appointed as Interim President and CEO. Reyes expressed gratitude in a LinkedIn post for Bodager's mentorship over the years: “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Brian Bodager... Please join me in extending our best wishes to Brian and his family.”

The Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia A. Thompson praised Bodager's leadership: “Brian was a wonderful colleague whose leadership and ministry was felt across the UCC... I am grateful for his quiet and grace-filled presence.” The Rev. Dr. Rodney Franklin also paid tribute: “Brian was my friend and trusted colleague... That one step propelled the Pension Boards’ staff into new ways of thinking.”

Bodager joined the Pension Boards in 2015 after serving on its Board of Trustees for 12 years. With over three decades of experience as a banking executive and attorney, he brought significant expertise to his role at the Church.

A memorial service is planned at The Chapel of The Interchurch Center in New York on March 26, 2025. Additionally, a celebration of life will be held in Wisconsin in June 2025.
