Chicago Public Schools opens preschool applications for 2025-26
Pedro Martinez Chief Executive Officer | Chicago Public Schools

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) have opened applications for the 2025-26 preschool programs, targeting families interested in the District's early education offerings. The application process began on April 8 on the Chicago Early Learning website and application portal. The options include a free full-day preschool program for four-year-olds and a half-day program for three-year-olds.

CPS CEO Pedro Martinez stated, "It is never too early to start joyful learning, and there are more options than ever for families who need and are interested in early learning opportunities for their young children." He emphasized the District's focus on enhancing educational programming at an early age across neighborhoods.

Currently, over 90 percent of CPS preschools have achieved the Gold Circle of Quality by ExceleRate Illinois, while others have received silver and bronze. All programs meet educational standards at federal, state, and local levels. CPS, in conjunction with the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS), aims to offer high-quality preschool programs for all four-year-olds and a limited number of part-day programs for three-year-olds in 372 elementary schools.

Open houses and reading nights are scheduled across the district during the week of April 8, allowing families to learn more about preschool offerings. Leslie McKinily, CPS' Chief of Early Childhood Education, commented on the program’s success: “These programs have shown long-term benefits for children that prepare them to develop the social and emotional skills they need to succeed.”

The District has expanded early childhood learning opportunities in recent years, focusing initially on under-resourced areas as part of a broader initiative with the DFSS to ensure access to quality preschool programs city-wide. Preschool classrooms use a standardized curriculum designed to foster academic skills, curiosity, independence, and a love of learning.

The continuing quality improvement process means CPS preschool programs undergo evaluation, with many earning high marks for instructional quality. More details on CPS Preschool programs can be found on the District’s website, and application support is available through the Chicago Early Learning Hotline at 312-229-1690.
