Cook County unveils centralized online hub for advancing local digital equity
Toni Preckwinkle County Board President | Cook County Government

Cook County has launched a new Digital Equity website, digitalequity.cookcountyil.gov, aimed at connecting residents and organizations with resources and initiatives that support equitable access to technology throughout the county.

The site consolidates information about the Digital Equity Action Plan, which serves as a countywide strategy to expand digital access, build confidence in technology use, strengthen internet safety, and improve infrastructure. By gathering tools and opportunities in one place, the website is designed for residents, organizations, and policymakers seeking to engage with digital equity programs.

“Digital access is not a luxury, it is a necessity,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “With this new website, Cook County is making it easier for residents to find resources, organizations to collaborate and policymakers to act. This is about breaking down barriers and ensuring that every community has the tools and opportunities to succeed in a digital world.”

The website emphasizes community input and collaboration.

“Our website is a trusted source of information and a commitment to our residents,” said Kyla Williams Tate, Cook County’s inaugural Director of Digital Equity. “It lifts up the stories, needs and solutions shared across Cook County. With an accessible and easy-to-use site, we’re creating a more equitable digital foundation that brings opportunity and connection to more communities.”

Resources available through the site include device donation programs and digital skills training opportunities intended for residents as well as nonprofits, libraries, policymakers or others interested in improving digital engagement.

“Its data and mapping tools give partners the insight they need to target investments effectively and efficiently, spurring economic growth and expanding opportunity where it is needed most,” said Mauricio Jimenez, Digital Equity Coordinator for Cook County.

Features on the website include:

- The Digital Equity Map shows where efforts are underway by Cook County or its partners to address gaps in broadband connectivity.

- A Resource Library provides information on affordable internet options, device access programs, digital skills training initiatives, along with stories from participants.

- Opportunities are listed for involvement in county initiatives such as device donation drives or participation in networks like the Digital Navigator Network.

- Key statistics are presented: 27% of households in Cook County lack wireline internet service; 21% do not have a computer at home; input from 3,400 residents was gathered during planning via surveys or other engagement activities.
