STEAM-Powered Saturday, an event focused on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), offered a range of hands-on activities for children and families. The program aimed to deepen understanding of scientific concepts through interactive experiences and educational resources.
The event covered topics such as the differences between alligators and crocodiles. While neither species is native to Chicago, participants were encouraged to explore local wildlife in the Chicago River ecosystem. More information about the river's ecosystem can be found on the Friends of the Chicago River website.
Bioluminescence was another subject highlighted at the event. Children learned how certain organisms glow due to chemical reactions in their bodies—a natural process that can help ward off predators. Some bioluminescent animals live in deep ocean environments, but others may be found closer to home. Resources for further exploration include articles accessible via library databases and videos demonstrating glowing mushrooms under UV light.
Constellations and stargazing were also featured topics. Although city lights often obscure many stars, some constellations like the Big Dipper or Orion’s Belt are still visible on clear nights. Attendees were encouraged to use eBooks available with a library card to learn more about identifying constellations and tracking celestial events.
Urban wildlife was discussed as well, highlighting nocturnal animals commonly seen in Illinois and Chicago neighborhoods such as owls, possums, and raccoons. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources provides guides on local wildlife that families can access for more information or printable coloring pages.
The issue of light pollution was addressed during the event with information on how it affects urban environments and efforts by the City of Chicago to mitigate its impact.
Partners supporting STEAM-Powered Saturday included the Art Institute of Chicago, Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, Illinois Mycological Association, and Shedd Aquarium.
Additional resources related to STEAM concepts are available through a curated booklist at participating libraries. ScienceConnections programs continue throughout the year at various branches for those interested in more hands-on activities.
The next STEAM-Powered Saturday is scheduled for October 3, 2026.
