The Rev. Karen Georgia Thompson, who currently serves as General Minister and President/CEO of the United Church of Christ (UCC), has been elected as the next president of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC). The election took place on October 22 during WCRC’s 27th General Council in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

“To elect a woman as president is a continuation of our seriousness regarding empowering women in leadership and lifting this leadership to the world,” said the Rev. Najla Kassab, WCRC’s current president.

The newly elected leadership slate for WCRC includes members from various countries such as Brazil, Germany, Ghana, Zambia, and Cuba. Of those elected, there are 12 women, 10 men, three youth representatives, nine lay people, and 13 ordained leaders. This group represents all regions affiliated with WCRC.

The UCC is among the member churches of WCRC. The organization was established in June 2010 through the merger of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches and the Reformed Ecumenical Council. Today it stands as one of the largest Christian communions globally after the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Anglican Communion.

Rev. Thompson will be officially installed during a worship service on Thursday morning, October 23.
